Join us for Take Back the Night – APRIL 17th at 6pm!

  • Marion Square Park

PAR’s first Take Back the Night was held in 1985, making this year’s event our 29th
annual rally. PAR’s commitment to helping and healing goes beyond responding to
victims in times of crisis. We are committed to supporting survivors and
encouraging them, and everyone, to speak up and speak out against violence and
sexual assault. We invite everyone in the community to join us for another great
Take Back the Night event on April 17th from 6-9p.m. in Marion Square, downtown
Charleston.

The night’s festivities will include live music, games and giveaways, and children’s
activities. Speakers will include Dean Kilpatrick, PAR’s Board of Director’s Chair and
one of the original founders of PAR, Chief Gregory Mullen of the Charleston Police
Department, Mayor Joseph Riley, and a sexual assault survivor, Lori Johnson. We’ll
also invite everyone to publicly take the pledge “to not commit, condone, or remain
silent about sexual violence.”

Join us for a night of excitement and empowerment as we stand together and rally
against sexual violence and Take Back the Night!

The Importance:

Approximately 1,100,000 forcible rapes occur every year, which means that at least
two rapes are perpetrated every minute. What’s more, the vast majority of these
assaults are never reported, and many victims suffer in silence. Take Back the Night
is intended to give survivors back their voice. This year’s motto, “Shatter the silence,
stop the violence,” encourages women, men, children, and all those who are
survivors to stand together against rape and sexual assault.

The History:

The first official Take Back the Night in the United States was held in Philadelphia in
1975 in response to the brutal stabbing and murder of a young scientist, Susan
Alexander Speeth, while walking home alone. Citizens rallied and cried out against
violence in the streets. The following year, The International Tribunal on Crimes
Against Women held the first international Take Back the Night event, with over
2000 women attending from 40 different countries. These two events sparked more
rallies to occur all across Europe and the United States. For almost 40 years,
colleges, universities, women’s centers, and rape crisis centers have been hosting
and sponsoring Take Back the Night events.
